Anarchists’ Brunch: New Toy Day

That’s what we get today, as Jose Quintana will make his Cubs debut in Baltimore. It’s perhaps the most exciting aspect of a big trade for your team, at least on this end where you’re in contention and you’re hoping this is the piece that pushes them over the top. You get the jarring of seeing that player in your team’s jersey. It’s not like free agency where you get all winter and spring training to picture it. Quintana was acquired on Thursday and now it’s just a couple days later and here he is.

It’s something a little more when it’s a pitcher, because of the control they exert over a game and they only pitch every fifth game. So there’s something of a build up to it. And the bigger the name the more exciting it gets. I remember Rich Harden Day vividly. Sadly, that didn’t end up all that well that season. We all recall Nomar Garciaparra Day.
